As with dental caries, periodontal disease is a common and typical disease in the oral cavity of mankind. The recent researches report that periodontal disease is a major cause of teeth loss, with the exception of the upper & lower 3rd molars in the adult.
The purpose of this research is to examine economic effectiveness and benefit analysis of preventive scaling. First, by grasping the percentage of dentulous Korean people showing signs of periodontal disease. Second, by estimating direct and indirect expense of periodontal disease case. Third, by providing a reason for a new policy by the public health administration, regarding the economic effectiveness of preventive scaling.
The method of this research is comparing treatment cost with direct expense and indirect expense of preventive scaling. The subjects are dentulos Korean people of fifteen years of age and over showing signs of periodontal disease
The results of this analysis are : first, by comparing yearly direct expense of preventive scaling with yearly total treatment of periodontal disease , expense saving of 6% expense were achieved by preventive scaling. Second, by comparing yearly indirect expense of preventive scaling with yearly total treatment cost of periodontal disease, people showing signs of periodontal disease were saving 37% of the expense with preventive scaling. Third, in case of total population, the cost of preventive scaling is lower than the cost of periodontal disease treatment by 18%. Fourth, indirect benefit is not conversed into economic value but it would be enormous, if it could be conversed. In conclusion, preventive scaling is a benefitial and a must used method in preventing further periodontal disease. Regular preventive scaling at an earlier age can contribute in improving people´s oral health.
